Using Windows To Manage A Hard Drive

 

2.      With your instructor's permission, use the Defragmenter utility to defragment the hard drive of your computer.  

3.      Use ScanDisk to repair any cross-linked or lost clusters on the drive. 

4.      Create a file on an empty disk with a long filename. 

 

Comparing The Data Storage Cost Of Devices

 

Research the market (using, for example, Computer Shopper) and fill in the following table to compare the storage costs of different secondary storage devices.  You may rename your headings (you are lokkinf for at leat 2 different type of storage types).

Recover a File

 

Using a word processor, create and save a short document under the name Test.del.  Using Windows Explorer, delete the newly created document.  Open the Recycle Bin, and select File, Restore to undelete the file Test.del.

Change the setting of the Recycle Bin so that it has 0 capacity to save. Now delete the same file.  What is the message? can you recover your file.

Check the internet for Recover lost data, and then discuss with a partner or methods of retrieving deleted files. (Norton system works, DOS, outside services......)

 

Practicing COMMAND LINE PROCESSING

    (if the instructor did not teach DOS command yet stop)

 

Perform the following procedures and commands. 

  1. Go to the DOS prompt

  2. Do a directory listing (dir)

  3. What are the "switch options"  (dir /?)

  4. Change the directory to Program files by using the the first 6 characters a ~ and a number 1.

  5. Change back to your previous directory (or the ROOT directory).

  6. Change the directory to Program files by using quotes.

  7. Send a dir listing to a file by using a >.
