Cosmic Neighbors

With the increasing refinement of their techniques, astronomers were able to make contact with intelligent life forms on a new planet each year from 2011 to 2016. Each planet lay within a different constellation (Andromeda, Cetus, Eridanus, Lupus, Scorpio, and Ursa Major). On each planet, the intelligent life form resembled a different kind of terrestrial being (ants, coral, dogs, hawks, octopuses, or salmon). Can you determine the order in which contact was made with the planets, the constellation where each planet lay, and the terrestrial animals each planet’s life forms most resembled?

  1. The coral like beings were on a planet outside Eridanus.
  2. The planet with the dog like beings was discovered three years after the planet in Eridanus.
  3. Intelligent beings resembling salmon inhabited the watery planet in Ursa Major.
  4. In the year 2014, astronomers contacted beings resembling either ants or coral.
  5. The beings on the planet in Scorpio were contacted one year later than the ant like beings.
  6. The intelligent beings discovered one year after those in Scorpio didn’t resemble octopuses.
  7. In the year 2012, contact was made with a planet in either Andromeda or Cetus.
  8. Astronomers contacted the hawk like beings three years before of three years after they reached the beings resembling octopuses.
  9. The year after the discovery of the hawk like beings, astronomers contacted a planet outside both Andromeda and Lupus.
