Communications Career and Financial Management

  • LOCATIONS:  Orleans Career and Technical Education Center and Niagara Career and Technical Education Center

    Four academic courses are offered at the Career and Technical Education Centers, which help students fulfill their obligations towards graduation.

    TECHNICAL MATHEMATICS

    This curriculum was created for the integration of technical mathematics over two years within the Career and Technical Education class.  Students will understand mathematics as it is applied to the Occupational program content.  They will become mathematically confident by communicating and reasoning mathematically by applying mathematics in their Occupational program with real-world applications, settings and proficiency.  Problem-solving through integrated study of number systems, geometry, algebra, data analysis, probability and trigonometry will all be covered as it relates to the student's program area.

    Prerequisites: Successful completion of two math courses. 

    TECHNICAL SCIENCE

    This curriculum was created for the integration of technical science over two years within the Career and Technical Education class.  Students will understand Science as it is applied to the Occupational program content.  Students will understand and apply scientific concepts, principles and theories as it is related to their specific Occupational program content. 

    They will also work with the integration of chemistry, physics, earth science and life sciences as it relates to the physical setting and living environment.  They will also make connections to non-science disciplines as mathematics, history and language arts.  The course is designed to meet the needs of diverse student population, teach science processes and proven actual hands-on experience.

    Prerequisites: Successful completition of one science course.

    CAREER & FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT (Part A/Part B)

    All occupational education sequences must be included one unit of Career and Financial Management.  The purpose of this course is to provide students the opportunity to explore different career areas and acquire some basic transferable skills, which can be used in work or personal responsibilities.  The content of the course connects the required occupational education instruction at the junior high/middle school level with more specialized instruction offered at the secondary level. 

    4TH YEAR ENGLISH ELECTIVE TECHNICAL COMMUNICATIONS- WRITING

    The curriculum was created for the integration of English within our Career & Technical Education classes.  It addresses current English Language Arts Standards for the purpose of being offered as an elective embedded within our Career and Technical Education classes as Technical Communications/Technical Writing. 

    The curriculum offers a broad selection, over two years, of assignments from which the individual Career and Technical Education instructor may select, that will allow the student to build proficiency in each specific area.  Included within are assignments that range from technical writing, note taking/listening skills, essay writing specific to the Career and Technical Education program and business letters.  Other assignments include creating a detailed portfolio and creating detailed set of instructions for performaing a specific job task. 

    The lessons and assignments will be presented to students as reflected within their individual Career and Technical Education classes and are not to be treated as stand-alone English assignments.  They will be designed and delivered by both Career and Technical Education and academic instructors.
