Reading Recovery

What is Reading Recovery®?

What Works Clearinghouse (WWC)

Reading Recovery is a research-based prevention program designed to reduce the number of first grade students with reading difficulties. In addition to their regular classroom reading instruction, low-achieving students receive daily individual instruction designed to accelerate their reading achievement to the average level for their grade. Reading Recovery is designed for students whose reading scores fall in the lowest 25% in their classroom.

The adequate provision of Reading Recovery® in a school means that in terms of literacy:

  • Every student can have access to the best possible learning opportunities
  • Every student can be helped to reach full potential
  • Equity can be achieved and maintained
  • Students needing long term literacy support are identified early
