Graphic Communications Class Kindness Cards Starts Entrepreneur Spirit
Last year Graphic Communications teacher Susan Staddon gave her students a cool project to do: making kindness cards. “The first batch wen to the Health Occupations Technician program to distribute to seniors at the nursing home facility they visit,” she explains. They proved so popular that around the holidays, they made another batch for Children’s Hospital along with a stuffed animal for the patients there.
From there an idea for a small business venture was born and the students started making cards for a retail rack at the Niagara Career and Technical Education Center, where their class is housed. “Each month, the students donate the money they make from their card sales to a different organization. For the months of October and November, they donated to the Sunshine Fund at the BOCES center,” says Mrs. Staddon. “It is nice because each of my students is also building a library of their own cards with anticipation of reaching out to local shops and starting their own business.”
