COVID Community Letter From Dr. Godshall

April 16, 2021

Dear Orleans/Niagara BOCES Community:

Following the lead of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, the New York State Department of Health issued a new version of school guidance that permits students to be as little as three feet apart from each other, with certain exceptions.  The BOCES staff are studying the 24-page updated guidance document carefully and we anticipate providing further guidance with more detailed information.  Stakeholders will be solicited to gain their input as required.

We know there is strong interest in getting all students back in school in a safe way, consistent with clear guidelines from authorities on public health.  This guidance will potentially alleviate a great deal of the confusion that has existed since the CDC revised its guidelines on March 19th.

Our schools will follow their safety protocols for staff and students as we are directed by the enforcement agencies, including daily health screening questionnaires.

The Orleans/Niagara BOCES Board of Education has adjusted its calendar to observe Friday, June 18, 2021, in recognition of the Juneteenth state holiday.  BOCES will be closed that day for all students and staff.

Year-end activities are being planned to include completion ceremonies for our CTE students along with our alternative education students and students with special needs. Compliance with all COVID-19 protocols will be adhered to.

We continue to urge students and staff to help control the spread of COVID-19 by adhering to the following guidelines at all times:

  • Wearing masks.
  • Remaining socially distant whenever possible.
  • Be cognizant of your surroundings when not in a controlled environment.
  • Avoid congregate settings and help keep our schools open.
  • When interacting with individuals who are not part of your household, wear a mask

and socially distance.

  • Avoid large gatherings, especially inside a home or other indoor venues.
  • If you have any symptoms of COVID-19, stay home and consult with your health care provider.

I praise all of our students and staff as they continue to diligently follow our health and safety protocols to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.  Planning for summer and next year’s educational programs is underway, as are capital improvements at our facilities.

Sincerely,

Clark J. Godshall
