The Health Science Related Program area of our Adult Education sector offers an array of professional development opportunities that allow graduates to move into this high-demand career field seamlessly.

Our intensive year-long Practical Nursing program prepares students to take the State licensing exam upon graduation.
Other programs in Nursing Assistant, Home Health Aid, and Phlebotomy provide training opportunities that are short and intensive, yet provide important first steps in developing a skill-set for the high-demand health care sector.

Practical Nursing
The Orleans/Niagara BOCES full-time adult Practical Nursing (PN) program accepts applications for both the Niagara Falls and Lockport sites. The PN program is an excellent opportunity for students who are looking for a program that concentrates solely on nursing. The
one-year full-time program is rich in both the theoretical and clinical experience that are required to prepare students for licensure and employment as an LPN. Throughout the program, emphasis is placed on applying nursing knowledge, skills, and professional behaviors to real health care situations. This program follows a four day a week scheduling format that allows students to pursue their nursing education while they fulfill work/family responsibilities. Federal financial aid is available for eligible PN students.

Nursing Assistant
This course prepares the student to work as a hospital or long-term care Nursing Assistant. The course has a theory, lab and clinical component to teach the principles and skills required to seek certification. 

Those that successfully complete this program are eligible to take the State exam to earn their certification and begin working as a CNA. Classes are in Lockport, Niagara Falls and Medina. The class is approximately
150 hours in length, daytime hours, with varying schedules. New classes start every six to eight weeks.

Phlebotomy 
In accordance with CDC and OSHA guidelines, this 70-hour part-time course combines the theory, lab practice and clinical skills required to perform venipunctures.  Those that Successfully complete the program can find employment with these skills as phlebotomists in a variety of health care settings. Classes are scheduled evenings (5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.).

Home Health Aide (HHA)
Orleans/Niagara BOCES Home Health Aide Program is an approved training program designed to prepare the trainee to provide assistance and carry out healthcare tasks for patients in their homes or substitute homes. HHA classes consist of 75 hours of theory and lab instructions and 30 hours of clinical instruction.
The minimum passing score for this course is 85%.
