Group of students and teachers standing in hair salon

The Orleans Career and Technical Education Center Cosmetology classes recently visited the Atmosphere Salon on 330 South Transit Road in Lockport. The salon is unique in that not only does it function as a normal salon, it also becomes a haven for the disadvantage who need assistance and to youth who are looking for a mentor to help with their basic hair care and beauty services. Those who are eligible from grades 6-12 will also attend self-hair care and empowerment workshops and will volunteer to work at special events at the salon. They also have an adult program which is designed to serve adults 18 and up through local agencies who assist with recovery, healing or self-sufficiency.

The salon is founded by Theresa Little, who is the Executive Director. Mrs. Little says this project has been a work in progress for many years and she is thrilled to finally open the doors to the public. “It is a not-for-profit organization and our goal is to have a positive impact on the lives of individuals that will lead to their mental and emotional well-being. Our mission is to break the cycle of unfavorable circumstances and conditions by providing basic hair care and beauty services to those we serve in a relaxing atmosphere, where community, empowerment, equality and commitment are cultivated.” The salon will also be opened several days a week for paying customers who are looking for hair services.

Cosmetology teacher, Sue Lindke says the students loved the experience of seeing the salon, watching a demonstration and interacting with Mrs. Little. “The Atmosphere Salon is just beautiful! I am excited to have my students partner with Theresa for educational classes and community service projects. It was wonderful seeing my former student Tyneka Benton who will be working with Mrs. Little and gave a great demonstration on extensions to the students. ”

Mrs. Little is thrilled about training the next generation of stylists in her salon and helping those who need additional support in her community. “Our community outreach initiative will rely a lot on our volunteers. I am also looking forward to showing off some of our unique programs such as 60 and Beyond that serves African American women ages 60 and over. Not only will they receive basic hair care and beauty services, they will engage in activities that will motivate them to feel good about themselves regardless of their age or limitations. We will also be unveiling our Mattie Mobile Services which is an outreach program that provides basic hair care services to African American women residing in healthcare facilities. I am grateful to finally see my dream come to fruition and be able to cater to those who are underserved. I look forward to partnering with the Orleans/Niagara BOCES students.”
