A recent graduate of the Adult Electricity program at Orleans-Niagara BOCES has been given a unique opportunity to work on a massive project for Amazon.

Russell Peterson, a recent graduate of the Electricity Program, is currently working on installing data and security systems as a sound wireman at the Amazon fulfillment center that is under construction at 8995 Lockport Road in the Town of Niagara.

After graduating from the program, Russell secured a job doing residential electrical work with the help of program teacher Mike Murphy. He subsequently became a member of IBEW Local 237, which in turn gave him the opportunity to work on the Amazon building.

Russell said the hands-on experiences he gained while in the Electricity Program were instrumental in preparing him for this new opportunity.

“It definitely gave me more confidence,” says Russell.

Russell shared his gratitude towards Adult Education Coordinator Maureen Bartlett and Mike Murphy for helping him through his educational journey at BOCES and beyond.

“I would not be here in this position if it weren't for them, so I would like to thank them very much,” says Russell.

The Electricity program offers students a basic and foundational understanding of electricity that provides the knowledge and skills needed to move on to wiring and more advanced electrical course offerings. Instruction covers resistance, capacitive and inductive circuit analysis, power generation, AC and DC theory and simple series/parallel circuits. Hands-on activities are explored in a lab setting with the instructor. Every student who completes the training will receive their OSHA 10 Certification card.

Fall classes run from September 15 through December 23. For information on classes, interested students should contact ON BOCES by calling 716-731-6800 and asking for Adult Skilled Trades or by visiting https://wnytrades.com/programs/
