Students in the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Health Occupations Technician (HOT) programs at Orleans/Niagara BOCES recently got to experience a simulated childbirth with an obstetrical birthing manikin.
Teachers Rodney Hogg (EMS) and Darcy Bouchard (HOT) recently invited the Catholic Health EMS Liaison team of Phil Richardson and Taylor Zaccarine into their classrooms at the Niagara Career and Technical Education Center for a hands-on demonstration. Thanks to the coordination of Emily Rowles-James, the System Manager of EMS, the two medical professionals guided students through the stages of labor and delivery, demonstrating proper techniques for patient assessment, delivery assistance and newborn care.
Through these interactive scenarios, the classes were able to practice critical skills in a safe, controlled environment while gaining a deeper understanding of childbirth procedures. The liaisons also shared real-world insights, answered questions and reinforced the importance of teamwork, communication and patient-centered care in obstetric emergencies.
Mr. Hogg and Ms. Bouchard say they are very grateful to Catholic Health for allowing their students this true-to-life healthcare training.
