The EMS and Fire Science class took a field trip May 5th to the Niagara County Emergency Services. The trip was hosted and coordinated by Director of Emergency Services & Fire Coordinator Jonathan Schultz, EMS Division Manager Tom Eggert, and Senior Dispatcher Travis Leaderstorf.
Teacher Rodney Hogg says, “They had an informative and interactive day planned out, where the students gained a firsthand look at how emergency services work together to protect the community during their field trip to the Niagara County Dispatch Center and Emergency Services facilities. During the visit, students learned how 911 dispatchers receive emergency calls, gather important information, and coordinate responses between police, fire, and EMS agencies. They were able to observe the communication systems and technology used to send help quickly and efficiently during emergencies.”
Students then explored the emergency response ambulances and fly cars, and learned about the equipment and specialized equipment carried by EMS providers. Demonstrations highlighted how the equipment worked and how emergency personnel assess and care for patients, use life-saving medical tools and prepare for a variety of emergency situations. The experience gave students a greater understanding of careers in emergency services, teamwork during emergency responses, and the importance of preparedness and public safety within the community.
At the conclusion of the trip, staff members spoke with students about future career and employment opportunities in EMS and emergency dispatching, including the education, certifications, and skills needed to pursue careers as EMTs, paramedics, and 911 dispatchers.
