Students and firefighters in front of fire truck

The Wolcottsville Fire Company, under the direction of Chief Paul Gurnett and firefighter Tanner Gurnett, visited NCTEC with their fire engine to assist the Fire Science students in developing the knowledge and hands-on skills necessary to complete their BEFO equivalency requirements.

Teacher Rodney Hogg says, "During the field experience, students had the opportunity to work with Chief Gurnett and FF Gurnett of the Wolcottsville Fire Company and gain valuable hands-on exposure to fire service equipment and operations. They demonstrated a wide variety of tools carried on the engine, including portable lighting equipment, generators, various size hoses, and other essential firefighting equipment."

Students also observed and participated in fire hose deployment operations and learned proper hose re-bedding techniques following simulated fireground activities. This experience allowed students to apply classroom instruction to real-world fire service practices while learning the importance of teamwork, safety, communication, and emergency response operations.

This hands-on field skills provided valuable career-based learning opportunities and helped students gain a greater understanding of the responsibilities, expectations, and skills required within the fire service profession.
