Two students in fire gear trying to open door

tudents in the Fire Science program participated in a hands-on field training focused on forcible entry techniques, an essential skill for fire operations and life safety. This training was made possible through the support of the Sanborn Fire Company and Chief Rob Hoover II, which generously loaned a dedicated forcible entry prop door for instructional use.

During the session, students were introduced to the principles behind conventional and through-the-lock forcible entry, including size-up considerations, tool selection, and proper striking techniques. Instruction was emphasized on safety, control, and efficiency while demonstrating the correct use of tools such as flat-head axes, halligan tools, and sledgehammers.

Students were then given the opportunity to apply these skills in a controlled environment using the prop door. Under supervision, they practiced coordinating team movements, setting tools, and completing door openings as they would in real emergency situations. This allowed students to build confidence, improve coordination, and better understand the physical and tactical demands of forcible entry on the fireground.

The training reinforced classroom instruction and provided students with valuable real-world experience that directly supports their development toward meeting Firefighter Exterior Operations (BEFO) skill competencies.
